Why Is Writing Important?
Think about your career goals, and explain how you will have to use writing and communication to become successful. Try to think outside of the realm of school, and into the actual profession you are aiming toward. What kind of writing will you have to do? How will your writing and communication skills have to improve to get to where you need to be?

The major I have chosen to pursue at Oakland is Biology. Science, and more specifically zoology have always been a passion of mine. I find animals to be the most interesting things in the world. In kindergarten when my class was told to do a presentation on what we wanted to be when we grew up I said I wanted to be a zoologist. And this still holds true, In the field of zoology writing and communication are two very important aspects.
In zoology and most fields of science you have to write lab reports, which have a very specific set of guidelines. They must be as clear and concise as possible, while still being detailed enough so that a person can read it, and recreate your experiment flawlessly and come up with the same result. Without the proper writing skills you wouldn't be able to record your research or data properly, and you lab reports would be unusable.
Communication plays a key role in zoology as well. Although zoology deals with animals, you still have to be able to communicate with people. Research in the lab and out in the field both require you to vocalize and share ideas with your peers. Most of the time you have to be creative in figuring out a way to complete an experiment or collect data, this would be nearly impossible without communication.
My skills in writing and communication could improve in many ways. I enjoy writing lab reports for biology and I feel that I have actually gotten pretty good at them, but there is always room to improve. Creative writing on the other hand, isn't something I struggle with. I'm a creative person, I just can't get myself to sit down and write a paper to save my life. I guess that's why I've always been more interested in math and science. Communicating I also feel I'm pretty good at in the if I really know what I'm talking about and have done the research. But again, there is always room to improve, which is what I'm looking to do in this class.
